Military Palanquin
Military Palanquin
The “shenjiao” (divine palanquin) comes in two types: the “wenjiao” (civil palanquin) and the “wujiao” (martial palanquin). The martial palanquin typically has no roof and is used for deities who were once military generals.
The wujiao (martial palanquin) is lighter in weight, allowing for more dynamic and varied movements during temple visits. It is often adorned with five-colored flags representing the five directions, which are typically placed at the back of the palanquin. As these vibrant flags sway up and down in rhythm with the synchronized steps of the palanquin bearers, they enhance the lively and spirited character of the wujiao.
