The National Palace Museum
The National Palace Museum
In 1949, as the Nationalist government relocated to Taiwan, it brought along a vast collection of cultural relics. These treasures were temporarily housed in Yangmei and later in Wufeng, Taichung.
To preserve and display the collection, the government began construction of the National Palace Museum in Waishuangxi, Taipei, in 1961. Completed in 1965, the museum became a major cultural landmark.
The building’s classical Chinese design reflects its mission to preserve Chinese heritage. Inspired by traditional “Mingtang” architecture, it features a symmetrical layout, vessel-shaped floor plan, and iconic hipped roofs, symbolizing elegance, balance, and cultural continuity.
