Torii

The torii is a symbolic boundary between the sacred realm of the shrine and the secular world.
It is typically composed of two vertical pillars and a horizontal crossbeam.
The triangular tops of the pillars represent the heavens, while the crossbeam symbolizes the earth—their intersection signifies the unity of heaven and earth.
The vermilion color of the Myōjin torii symbolizes sanctity and solemnity, marking the entrance to a sacred space for worshippers.

The origin of the torii is surrounded by many theories, one of which traces it back to ancient Japanese mythology.
When the sun goddess Amaterasu hid herself inside the Heavenly Rock Cave, the eternal long-crowing rooster stood at the entrance and crowed.
Later, people began building torii gates in front of Shinto shrines to symbolize the eternal long-crowing rooster.
The torii represents sanctity and solemnity. When worshippers pass through it, it symbolizes their transition from the secular world into the sacred realm.
In doing so, their spirit is also purified.
