Description

Rotating Butler Sign

Temple Steward Plaque

Each butler is entrusted with a dedicated responsibility, serving as a member of the ceremonial procession.
In modern deity parade processions, the butlers (ceremonial attendants) are positioned at both the front and rear of the formation. Those at the end, known as the “Thirty-Six Attendants” (三十六執事), each carry a different ceremonial weapon or item as part of the honor guard.
In the front section of the ceremonial guard, attendants carry items such as the Dragon-Head Staff (龍頭杖), Golden Melon Staff (金瓜杖), and Tall Wooden Signboards (高腳木扁).
The Dragon-Head Staff symbolizes leadership, dignity, solemnity, authority, and the power to ward off evil.
The Tall Wooden Signboards, usually painted in vermilion red—though some feature black characters on a white background—serve as guiding markers at the head of the procession. They represent warning, discipline, and ceremonial presence.

Examples of such signboards include the “Silence” sign (肅靜牌), “Make Way” sign (迴避牌), “Ritual Procession” sign (祀典牌), “Imperial Bestowal” sign (賜封牌), and “Main Deity” sign (主神牌).
These signs not only guide the way for the deity’s procession but also serve to command respect and ward off negative or unclean energies along the route, signaling all to remain silent and make way.
