Chiayi Chenghuang Temple

Chiayi Chenghuang Temple

The Chiayi Chenghuang Temple was originally established during the Qing Dynasty in the administrative seat of Zhuluo County, then part of Taiwan Prefecture. It is one of the three oldest temples in the historic walled city of Zhuluo (present-day Chiayi), and the earliest City God Temple founded by the local government in the region.
At the time, Zhuluo County governed a vast area stretching south to the Xingang River and north to Keelung, encompassing regions such as Yilan, Hualien, and Taitung. The City God of Zhuluo (Chenghuang) was venerated as the spiritual protector for all communities within this extensive jurisdiction.
Since its founding, the temple has enjoyed flourishing incense offerings and strong local devotion. The City God (Chenghuang) enshrined in the main hall is a locally carved Taiwanese statue, noted for its exquisite craftsmanship and dignified expression.
Located at No. 168, Wufeng North Road, Minzu Village, East District, Chiayi City, the temple stands as a witness to Chiayi’s local history and a center of cultural and religious life. It has been officially designated as a national historic monument of Taiwan.
