Description

Wu Jiao (martial palanquin)

Literary Palanquin

Traditional divine palanquins used in Taiwanese folk religion are typically classified into two types: the Wen Jiao (literary palanquin) and the Wu Jiao (martial palanquin). The Wu Jiao is usually roofless and carried for deities who were once military generals.
Because the Wu Jiao is lighter in weight, it allows for more dynamic and expressive movement during temple processions. These palanquins often feature five-colored flags attached to the rear, representing the five directions. As the bearers move in synchronized, rhythmic steps, the flags sway with energy, embodying the vibrant and powerful spirit of the martial deities.
